Sports

Games and sports play an important role in our school. In fact it is an integral part of the school curriculum. Xavier's provides excellent infrastructure, one of the best among Delhi schools, for the students to excel in sports. These include all facilities for athletics, a badminton court, three basket ball courts, one cricket and football field including one practice pitch, baseball field, table tennis facilities and a swimming pool with a length of 25 mts. Students are given the freedom to choose and specialize in any sport of their choice. We have produced numerous sports stars in various games. Xavier's actively competes at all levels of sports- inter-class, inter-house, inter-school, zonal, inter-zonal, state, national and even in inter-nationals too. The various tournaments we organize are- Niesen Memorial Basketball Tournament, Catholic Football Tournament, D.D. Malik Inter-class Cricket Tournament for seniors, and Chaitanya Dubey Memorial Inter Class Cricket Tournament for juniors. There are three basketball courts in our school equipped with all modern facilities- one near the canteen and the other two towards the back gate. The courts have a dimension of 28x15meters. We also have a huge football cum cricket ground (length 100 to130; breadth 50 to 100 yards) on one side of the junior school and in front of the Heritage Building. The Baseball field is in front of the Heritage Hall and the badminton court is situated near the Prep Department.
Xavier's first 'Sports Day' was held in 1961. But it was not until 1965 that the school-relay team was formed. Shaheed Mangalu, Boroth Chuaan, Kamaljit Singh, Steve Wilson were some of the best athletes of 1960's. The Basketball team was started in 1962. This happened when Charles D. Bialowas, Peace Corps Volunteer arrived at Xavier's. Hockey and football had occupied a high standard in the school by 1964-65 under the expert coaching of Mr. Mendonca and later Mr. A. Singh. Students participated in various school and interschool matches and won laurels for their alma mater. Boxing was introduced in St. Xavier's in 1965 by Fr. Moore. Mr. D. Neale, an ex-navy boxer trained the Xavier boxers and brought them to a very high standard.
